Dentro de los estudios del desarrollo, existe toda una arena de investiga-ción que respalda el papel clave que las tecnologías de comunicación móvil tienen en el soporte a las actividades que contribuyen con los medios de vida de diferentes individuos en las regiones en desarrollo, al igual que en acelerar el paso para alcanzar los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenibles (ODS), particularmente en los países de bajos y medianos ingresos. De ahí que este capítulo se ubique dentro del área temática de investigación de las tecnologías móviles para el desarrollo (M4D), la cual hace parte de un campo de estudio más amplio conocido como tecnologías de la infor-mación y la comunicación para la investigación y el desarrollo —ICT4D o ICTD por sus siglas en inglés—.
Si bien este es un campo multidisciplinar que aborda una amplia gama de instrumentos dentro del espectro de las TIC, los teléfonos móviles, principalmente los básicos, han tomado la de-lantera dentro del estudio de estas tecnologías para el desarrollo debido a su viabilidad económica y amplia difusión.
Este trabajo de investigación aborda el impacto de los teléfonos mó-viles en la experiencia de los migrantes y su contribución al desarrollo de sus vidas, con el fin de identificar cómo estos dispositivos pueden ser una herramienta para empoderar a estas poblaciones; contribuir en su in-clusión digital y social; habilitar el desarrollo de estrategias migratorias; y contribuir a superar el desafío del despliegue de servicios financieros para los no bancarizados. El presente artículo utiliza como método la revisión sistemática de literatura que examina la evidencia existente sobre el uso de teléfonos móviles por parte de migrantes y cómo esto ha contribuido a su integración y empoderamiento en la sociedad.
