Actualmente las localidades en el ámbito de la globalización han experimentado un desarrollo que no es homogéneo ni en lo geográfico y ni socialmente. Es aquí donde las redes de conexión social para el desarrollo que lo origina en su interior se concentran en las grandes metrópolis debido a la multidiversidad de trabajo y centralización de oportunidades por ganancias de la afluencia (CAF, 2017). En este sentido, Blanco et al. (2016) afirman que más de la mitad de la población global vive en ciudades, por esta razón, el CAF (2017, p. 20) señala que América Latina es la región de mayor crecimiento de la población urbana desde 1950, donde pasó de una tasa de urbanización del 41 % en 1950 a 80 % en 2015.
Adicionalmente, León y Avilés (2022) sugieren que la población de los municipios alejados de las grandes metrópolis definidos como territorio rural, han disminuido progresivamente su población adulta en etapa de productividad, así mismo señalan Afonughe et al. (2023) que dado un rápido ritmo en que los jóvenes continúan abandonando las comunidades rurales a centros urbanos en búsqueda de mejor vida. De esta manera, Bock (2016), señala que es debido a que el territorio rural experimenta una geografía discapacitada por la marginación y destaca que esto es generado a la pérdida de redes de conexión de la localidad con la externalidad.
