El propósito de este estudio es examinar la forma en que los estudiantes universitarios utilizan su smartphone y cómo su uso impacta en el rendimiento académico. Bajo el supuesto de que la forma en que los estudiantes universitarios utilizan su smartphone, mejora sustancialmente el rendimiento académico. Se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo de nivel descriptivo-correlacional y diseño de campo, aplicando una encuesta a 306 estudiantes de la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa. Los hallazgos confirman que los estudiantes dan un uso académico del teléfono inteligente; sin embargo, no advierten que sus profesores lo utilicen como una herramienta académica.

La comunicación celular o móvil ha existido por décadas, su objetivo es realizar transacciones de llamadas telefónicas mientras se está en movimiento. En el año 1973, se dio a conocer el primer teléfono celular portátil por […] Motorola con un auricular que pesaba alrededor de 2.2 libras. En 1983, el teléfono DynaTAC 8000x fue el primero en estar disponible comercialmente (Murphy, 2013). Desde la década de los 90 y hasta el primer decenio del año 2000, el número de suscripciones de telefonía móvil a nivel global experimentó un incremento de 12.4 millones a más de 6 mil millones, penetrando aproximadamente el 87 % de la población mundial y alcanzando el fondo de la pirámide económica (Teixeira, 2010 y Saylor, 2012). La tecnología siguió evolucionando y cada vez se agregan más características para mejorar la funcionalidad y la inteligencia de la célula o teléfono móvil: se ha convertido en el teléfono inteligente (smartphone).
